Vinyl, CD & Cassette Manufacturers for Indie Artists

You finished the record. Now you need to figure out who's actually going to make it.

Finding a vinyl pressing plant, CD manufacturer or cassette duplicator is harder than it should be. Minimum orders vary wildly, published prices rarely include the same things, and a cheap quote stops looking cheap once shipping, test pressings, VAT or packaging are added.
This guide gives independent artists a practical shortlist of manufacturers in the US, UK and Europe, with one of our strongest picks at each budget level. It covers minimum orders, typical lead times and who each option makes the most sense for, so you can narrow the field before requesting quotes.
How we chose these manufacturers
This isn't a directory of every plant we found. For Making It Physical, we kept manufacturers with strong evidence behind them: artist or label recommendations, established clients, genuine reviews or a solid specialist reputation. Some well-known names didn't make the cut. Nobody paid to be included.
For this article, we narrowed that research to one strong pick at each budget level in the US and UK/Europe for vinyl, CD and cassette.
Last checked October 2026. Minimum orders, turnaround times, pricing and availability change often, so use these as a starting point and always request a current quote before planning your release.
Vinyl, CD or Cassette?
If you already know what format you want, skip ahead. If you're still deciding, think about what you need the physical release to do.

Vinyl gives you the largest artwork canvas and the most packaging possibilities, but traditional pressing usually takes longer and costs more upfront. CDs are faster and work well for touring, mail order and releases where you need more copies without the cost of vinyl. Cassettes can make sense for smaller runs, with low minimums and enough packaging space to still create something considered.
There's no format you're supposed to make just because you're releasing an album. Pick the one that fits your audience, budget and release.
Before you compare manufacturing quotes
Three numbers matter most: minimum order, lead time and delivered price.
The minimum order, or MOQ, is simply the smallest run a manufacturer will make. Treat it as a floor, not a target. Ordering 300 because the per-unit price drops doesn't save you money if you realistically expect to sell 75.
Lead times need context too. If a manufacturer says eight weeks, ask when those eight weeks start: payment, artwork approval, test-pressing approval or another production milestone. And when comparing prices, look at the delivered total rather than the headline number. Shipping, VAT, duties, cutting, test pressings, packaging and inserts may or may not be included.
Vinyl Pressing Plants for Independent Artists
Vinyl is where the choice of manufacturer tends to matter most. Some plants are built around premium runs, others are geared toward independent artists, and a few offer accessible entry points around 100 copies.
These are our top starting points by budget.
Budget | United States | UK & Europe |
High | Third Man Pressing · Detroit, Michigan. From 200 per color. Lead time depends on capacity, with no rush service. Cutting, pressing and packaging under one roof. A strong fit when you want a premium plant but don't need a label-scale 1,000-copy minimum. | Record Industry · Haarlem, Netherlands. From 200. Test pressings in about 3 weeks, then 9–11 weeks. A strong option when pressing quality is the priority, with cutting and test pressings included. |
Mid | Gotta Groove Records · Cleveland, Ohio. From 100, or 50 on black. 2–3 months; plan for 3. Strong indie-label track record and staff listen to every test pressing in full. | Breed Media · Sheffield, UK. From 250. Lead time by quote. A good fit for UK artists who want an all-in published price covering cutting, test pressings, customs and UK delivery. |
Low | Disc Makers · New Jersey. From 100. 7–9 weeks, or longer with test pressings. Published entry price of $999 for 100 12-inch records in Euro jackets. A straightforward route for a first traditional pressing. | Press On Vinyl · Middlesbrough, UK. From 100 per color. 8 weeks including test pressings. Built around small independent runs and a useful option for artists who want a UK pressing plant without a large minimum. |
Which vinyl manufacturer should you choose?
The budget labels are only a starting point. Third Man and Record Industry make sense when pressing quality and production support are a bigger part of the release. Gotta Groove and Breed sit in a useful middle ground for independent artists who want established production without moving into very large quantities, while Disc Makers and Press On Vinyl are worth looking at when upfront cost and smaller runs matter more. Whichever route you choose, compare the delivered quote for the exact package you're making rather than picking from the headline price alone.
Want the full shortlist?
These are our top picks at each budget. Making It Physical has the full shortlist: more plants for most formats, every manufacturer that met our standard, published prices where available, packaging formats and a ready-to-send quote email.
It also explains the packaging terms you'll run into while getting quotes, from gatefolds and inner sleeves to digipaks, J-cards, inserts and specialty finishes.
CD Manufacturing for Bands and Independent Artists
Before comparing CD manufacturers, it helps to know whether you need duplication or replication. Duplicated CDs are burned and work well for small, fast runs. Replicated discs are made from a glass master and are generally used for larger quantities and retail production. For many independent artists making CDs for a tour, merch table or direct orders, duplication is more than enough.
Budget | United States | UK & Europe |
High | Copycats Media · Minneapolis, Minnesota. Short runs under 300. Quote within 24 hours. Worth considering for more elaborate CD packages and eco-focused packaging. | Key Production · London, UK. From 500 replicated. Lead time by quote. Suits bespoke packages such as gatefold wallets, digipaks and larger fan packs. |
Mid | Disc Makers · New Jersey. From 100. Duplication in 6–8 days, or from 4 days with priority. A well-established all-in-one route with a very large review history. | Breed Media · Sheffield, UK. 300 on its current price list; confirm with them before ordering. Lead time by quote. Indie-focused, with FSC card and plant-based inks as standard. |
Low | Oasis Disc Manufacturing · New Jersey. From 100. Standard turnaround 6–8 days, with faster options available. A useful small-run route, particularly if you're interested in eco sleeves. | Band CDs · Hampshire, UK. From 20. Duplication from 4 working days. Especially useful for tour stock, merch tables and artists who simply don't need hundreds of CDs. |
Digipak, jewel case or card wallet?
Your packaging choice can change the quote almost as much as the disc itself. A jewel case uses the familiar plastic case with a booklet and tray card, a digipak gives you folding card panels and a more substantial presentation, and a card wallet is lighter, simpler and generally easier to post.

If design is already underway, make sure your designer knows which package and manufacturer you're using before final production files are built.

Cassette duplication in the US, UK and Europe
Cassette runs can start surprisingly small, but there are still real differences in duplication method, tape stock, shell options and packaging.

Real-time duplication copies at playback speed, while high-speed duplication is faster and generally better suited to larger quantities, so ask how your run will be made if the sound of the cassette itself matters to the project.
Budget | United States | UK & Europe |
High | Duplication.com · Toronto and Ohio. Basic package from 100. A few weeks, with rush available. Real-time duplication option, 60+ shell colors and full-body UV printing. | Band CDs · Hampshire, UK. From 20. 4–12 working days, depending on quantity. 70+ shell colors, UV shell print, foil J-cards, tins and other packaging options. |
Mid | National Audio Company · Missouri. From 50. 5+ weeks, with no rush service. An established tape specialist that manufactures its own tape stock. | Headless Duplicated Tapes · Prague, Czech Republic. From 50. About 2–3 weeks. An established European specialist producing on ferric tape. |
Low | Cryptic Carousel · New York. From 25. Lead time by quote. Published price of $100 for 25 tapes. A particularly approachable route for small DIY runs. | Tapeline · UK. Real-time duplication from 5, or standard short-run duplication from 25. Lead time by quote. A long-running UK supplier that works heavily with independent labels and artists. |
Band CDs appears in both the CD and cassette tables intentionally. It was one of the strongest small-run UK options we found in both categories.
One other tape-stock note: true chrome, or Type II, cassette tape is no longer manufactured, so genuine chrome stock offered now is old stock. Ask what tape is being used, and for a significant run, request a test cassette before approving the full order.
How many records, CDs or tapes should you order?
The manufacturer's minimum shouldn't decide your quantity for you. Start with how many copies you can realistically sell through shows, your online store, preorders and your existing audience, then request prices at two or three quantities you would genuinely consider.
If 100 records cost substantially more per unit than 300, that doesn't automatically make 300 the better deal. Look at the total cash you're tying up in stock, how long you expect it to last and where you're going to keep it. Preorders can help because they give you a real sales signal before committing to the full quantity. If you're unsure, being slightly conservative is usually easier to recover from than storing boxes of a release you overestimated.
How long does physical music manufacturing take?

Start earlier than you think, especially for vinyl.
The manufacturing window is only part of the schedule. You also need time for design, proofs, test pressings, corrections and shipping, so ask exactly when the quoted turnaround begins and work backward from there.
Vinyl capacity gets particularly tight around Q4 and Record Store Day production. If you're placing a traditional pressing order in October and need stock in December, don't assume a standard turnaround estimate will get you there. A short-run program, CD or cassette may be more realistic, or the physical edition may need to follow the digital release instead of arriving on the same day.
How to compare manufacturing quotes
The easiest way to compare manufacturers is to send each one the same project. Give them the same format, quantity, package, inserts, extras, delivery location and deadline; for vinyl, include the approximate minutes per side.
Then make sure each quote makes clear:
what's included in the price, including cutting, plating, test pressings, shrinkwrap, inserts or barcode where relevant
pricing at two or three realistic quantities
when the quoted lead time starts
delivered cost including shipping, VAT, duties or tariffs
artwork templates and specification sheets
what kind of proofs are provided and whether they cost extra
how overs and unders are handled
deposit, payment terms, rush options and holiday cutoffs
That's where the cheapest first number often stops being the cheapest job. The full Making It Physical guide includes a ready-to-send quote email you can use as a starting point.
Once you choose a manufacturer, get the templates
Get the production templates before the final packaging layout is built. Two manufacturers can both offer a six-panel digipak or 12-inch single jacket and still use different dimensions, spine widths, folds and safe areas.

Your designer should work from the current dieline and specification sheet for the manufacturer making the release. And if you already have cover art, that doesn't mean every other surface should simply repeat it: the jacket, disc, inner sleeve, labels, J-card or booklet can extend the same visual language in different ways.
Our upcoming "How to Design Vinyl, CD & Cassette Packaging" guide will cover package types, print prep, proofs and how to turn album artwork into a complete physical object.
FAQ: vinyl pressing, CD manufacturing and cassette duplication
How much does it cost to press 100 vinyl records?
There's no universal price because the jacket, vinyl color, cutting, test pressings, inserts and shipping can all change the total. As one published reference point checked in October 2026, Disc Makers listed 100 12-inch records in Euro jackets at $999. Always request a current delivered quote for your exact package.
What is the minimum order for vinyl pressing?
It depends on the plant. Among our public picks, Gotta Groove starts from 100, or 50 on black, while Third Man starts from 200 per color. Some manufacturers in the full Making It Physical shortlist go lower.
How long does it take to press vinyl?
Traditional vinyl production can take anywhere from several weeks to several months depending on the plant, capacity and approval process. Our picks range from around eight weeks at Press On Vinyl to around three months at Gotta Groove and Record Industry, and busy periods can add pressure.
What is the difference between CD duplication and replication?
Duplicated CDs are burned and generally suit smaller, faster runs. Replicated CDs are made from a glass master and are more commonly used for larger quantities and retail production.
How many CDs should a band order?
Order for the audience you have, not the biggest price break. Small-run manufacturers such as Band CDs start from 20, which can make much more sense for tour stock than committing to several hundred copies.
Where can I get a small run of cassette tapes made?
Our low-quantity picks include Cryptic Carousel in the US from 25 and Tapeline in the UK with real-time duplication from 5. Band CDs is another particularly accessible UK option, starting from 20.
Should I choose the cheapest manufacturer?
Not automatically. Compare what the quote includes, delivered cost, lead time, minimum quantity, packaging options and evidence of reliable work. A slightly higher manufacturing price can still be the cheaper decision if it prevents an oversized order, unexpected shipping costs or a missed release date.
